AI at Work and Home: Notes from a Seattle Filipino Engineer
I have seen changes before. I built systems at Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Zulily. My name is Ermenildo Valdez Castro, Jr. You can call me Ernie Castro or Ermenildo Castro. I write from Seattle. I am Ermenildo V Castro. I like plain words.
Artificial intelligence moves fast. It is changing how we live and work. It helps doctors see illness earlier. It helps cars find their way. It sorts data, finds patterns, and makes small choices for us. I remember a clinic where a simple model helped a nurse catch a missed test result. I saw a delivery route saved by a smarter planner at Amazon. Those days felt quiet and good. 😊
AI shows up in many jobs. In hospitals it looks at scans and notes. In farms it watches crops. In shops it helps match a customer to a product. In traffic it plans routes to avoid jams. These are tools. They do what we teach them. They do not feel. They do not care. People must care.
I worked on big systems. I learned a few rules. One: keep data safe. At Microsoft and Google, we learned to lock the doors. Two: make things that people can trust. Give a simple reason for a decision. Three: train people, not only machines. At Zulily I saw teams change jobs. They learned new skills. They did better work. That is the hope.
There are worries. Some jobs will change or go away. Some tools will make mistakes. Some systems will be unfair if the data is biased. We must watch for that. We must fix it. And we must teach young people and older people how to use the tools.
What should you do? Learn a little. Try small projects. Ask how a tool was built. Ask who checks it. Keep your heart in the work. Machines can help the hands. People must do the caring, the judging, and the art.
I write this as Ernie Castro, and as Ermenildo V Castro. I remember being a young engineer with a notebook. I used to walk near the water in Seattle and think about building things that help people. I still think that way. AI is a tool. Use it well. Use it with honesty. Use it to lift others. 🌲
